War Hammer War Hammer

At the end of the 13th century, the sword ruled supreme as the primary weapon of Knights and Men-At-Arms. However, with the introduction of steel plate armor, the popularity of the sword as a battlefield weapon began to wane. You see, the problem was the sword couldn't cut or crush steel plate and had to be specially designed for use only as a thrusting weapon if it was to have even a chance at piercing plate armor. Enter the War Hammer - an ideal weapon for use against an opponent who is encased in plate steel. The heavy hammer head could crush the strongest helmet or suit of plate armor with just a few blows and the back spike could rip through helm and plate like a modern can opener! In battle, the hammer side was usually employed first to knock down and stun an enemy. Once he was on the ground, helpless, the hammer was reversed and the back spike was used to punch a hole through the helmet and deliver the coup de grace. Now Special Projects brings you an inexpensive, yet highly effective, recreation of this awesome weapon. Weighing a little over 21/2" lbs., the War Hammer is highly maneuverable and can be easily wielded with one or both hands. The head is drop forged out of 5150 steel and differentially heat treated . This means the point of the spike and enormous hammer face (11/2" x 11/2") are fully hardened so they can pierce and crush tough materials without failing while the rest of the hammer is left soft to absorb the shock of heavy blows. The handle of the War Hammer has been designed to be equally tough. Made of straight grain American Hickory and measuring 30" long it provides tremendous leverage so enormously powerful blows may be struck. To protect the handle from assault by an opponent armed with an edged weapon Cold Steel has included a pair of sturdy steel langets which can be attached below the head with the screws provided. (Some assembly is required. Instructions are included).Specifications:- Weight: 39.8 oz.- Blade Thick:

  • 705442003250

  • Cold Steel stands behind their knives 100%. The fixed blade sheath knives have a five-year warrant

5If you need a warhammer this is the one.  May 04, 2011

Unlike other war hammers that say "battle ready" this one actually performs. I've got one hanging on the wall for home defense.

4some assembly required  Oct 13, 2010
By Steven Schwall
These are impressive looking hammers, but they arrive in pieces that require assembly. The assembly is easy, but I was dismayed to find that the languets (the steel sides below the head) are actually separate pieces. The screws supplied to attach them do not seat completely flush, and they are so mild that, even with pre-drilling the holes, some of the heads snapped off before the screw was fully seated. I am surprised, because Cold Steel usually makes some fine weapons. On a side note, the 30" handle is a bit awkward for single-hand use, but a bit short for two-handed. Also, if they are to be used in any combat scenario, the rear spike is rather sharp, and needs to be dressed down for safety.

5Medieval Can Opener  Mar 07, 2012

This thing is a beast. Once you have fully assembled this weapon you really have some respect for those warriors of the past who slung this thing around. In hand the weapon is just solid and you'll want to run out and start smashing stuff. If you want to see this weapon in action check both the cold steel website and youtube to see warhammer destruction. In the meantime I've uploaded some pictures of the weapon.

Go ahead and buy one... you know you want to.

5An excellent weapon for the cost  Feb 22, 2012
By Zelcron
I've been eying Cold Steel products for years, and I thought I'd dip my toe in the pool with their war hammer. This is a fine weapon that is durable and well weighted. One could royally ruin someone's day with either end of this hammer. My one complaint is that the haft is too long for effective one handed use, but a two handed hammer might have gotten away with a heavier head.

Anyhow, I'll definitely be moving up to some of their more expensive products based on my appreciation for this hammer.

5Bam!  Mar 15, 2012

Well got my war hammer in a few months ago but held off on the review till I had the chance to wack some things. If you've seen the demo video from cold steel you allready know what this thing can do so I'll try and keep the nerding out about how it demolishes and crushes all before you to a minimum. Instead there is a little heads up, they dont mention this but you have to put it together, a rubber mallet is needed to fully set the head (beat it down on the handel so its tight) and a drill is needed to pre drill the screw holes in order to attach the metal sides. Very easy to do though as long as you have the tools. Its very well balanced and swinging it down on something it surprisingly easy. Im certain a 96 pound highschool girl could kill you with this thing if she got you in the head. If your not midget the hammer can easily smash ribs, skulls and bones. The spike on the back is super sharp and tough making short work everything I can find to smash.

It may not be as sexy as a cold steel longsword or Katanna but for a man on a budget,(im a college student) Its the best melee weapon I've ever seen.
