Will tear if not completely full Dec 29, 2010
By Northern KY Jen We were very disappointed with this cargo carrier. It tore on our first trip; apparently because it was not completely full.
According to the instructions, the carrier should only be used if it is completely full. If it is not full, the warranty does not protect against any damage caused by the wind. The instructions specifically state:
IMPORTANT: Pack the carrier full so that the sides are pulled tight. This step keeps the load from shifting which may cause the straps to loosen. A fully packed carrier will not flap in the wind. Wind flapping can cause damage by wearing holes in the carrier material. Damage due to wind flapping is NOT covered by warranty.
Unfortunately, by the time we received and opened the carrier, we did not have time to return it and get another carrier before our holiday trip. Therefore, we packed everything into suitcases to try to fill out the carrier. We loaded it with 1 large suitcase, 3 medium (21-25" suitcases) and several duffle bags filled with clothes. This was enough to fill out the bottom of the carrier (and provide it with sufficient structure) but not enough to fill the top of the carrier. None of our items had any sharp edges (all of the suitcases were soft sided). It is important to note that if using this carrier, you will need luggage that has structure and you will need to pack it precisely so that it not only fits the bottom dimensions of the carrier but also fills the carrier completely.
It was very difficult to get the straps tight (they thread through a few buckles; they do not snap together like most luggage). We had to tighten the straps every time we stopped (every 60-100 miles); this may have been because the top of the carrier was not full.
While the bag stayed on our Subaru Outback (which has a luggage rack), the inside lining of the bag tore on our 300 mile trip. It appeared to tear where the straps crossed it on top. We used bungee cords during our return trip for added security and to try to decrease the wind/strap damage, however, the exterior began to tear on our return trip. Again, the tears were where the straps crossed the carrier.
Clearly, we will not use this bag again. If we had known that it had to be completely full and packed precisely, we would not have purchased it.

Tons of room. Oct 26, 2010
By JamesL Moved from Tampa,FL to Houlton,ME.
Pros: You can fit a ton of luggage in this thing. Left me with lots of room in my Durango. I filled this thing up with 6 large suitcases, filled it til it could barely zip up. Never had a problem with the load shifting once it was strapped in and loaded. I did however have to tighten the straps up every time I stopped for gas, not very much but it did loosen up a little bit. I don't know if it was because of the rain or if I didn't strap it correctly.(read cons)
Cons: If you want to keep your stuff dry you have to buy a liner separately. It rained every single day throughout my trip
and needless to say all my luggage was soaked along with most of my clothes. My fault for not buying the liner but not that big of a deal really, just had to wash everything over again. Also the straps were a bit confusing for me. Maybe I'm just a dummy. Took me a few minutes to figure out where and how to put the straps because the directions they send you aren't very detailed.
Overall I would recommend this item to anyone that plans to make a move and has quite a bit of luggage/cargo to take and wants to have the free space in your vehicle. I would STRONGLY suggest buying the liner so your stuff doesn't get soaked like mine did.

plenty of room Aug 08, 2010
By Anne We purchased the Packright Sport 3 for a family trip.
We needed more interior room and it gave us that.
We were able to pack all our soft luggage and then some for a 5 day trip.
We did hit some severe rain storms along the way and anything that was near
the seams did get damp.
I would suggest the waterproof liner if you need waterproof.
I think I will just use the heavy duty trash bags offered at home improvement stores
for our next journey.
We were quite happy with the extra room inside the car!
Awesome Car Top Carrier Dec 30, 2011
By Josh H. I bought this carrier to take to Florida last spring. It holds a LOT of stuff. It stayed secure and i had no problems with it. I also purchased the non slip pad and the interior waterproof liner. All worked well. Make sure if you use it that you fill it up tight. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good carrier.

4 out of 5 stars with my Subaru Outback Oct 23, 2011
By Vermonstergirl I traveled from SC to CA with the PackRight on top of my Subaru Outback. I didn't need to purchase any additional hardware, as my car came with factory cross bars. It worked great!! The only issue I had was the noise that reverberated into the car, which I think could have been solved had I jam packed the bag as instructed. However, with 2 carry on suitcases tucked into it, along with several other small bags, various Harley gear, kitchen boxes, etc, it STILL wasn't full. I also think the noise coming into the car could have been avoided if the bag wasnt resting on the car and was in some kind of netting, even though I bought the Pad to place under the Bag, it protected the rooftop but wasn't a noise barrier, as I thought it would. All in all, 4 out of 5 stars for sure!
