5best knife you can buy  Sep 21, 2009
By M. Rogan
ive used this knife for 2 years now and it has never dissapointed me. i love how it feels in your hand, how it cuts, and the size and looks of it. i go primitive camping twice a week for 3 years now and this is the only knife i take with me. i dig holes for fire pits or number 2 if you know what i mean, i have opened countless cans with this knife and have split wood via batoning hundredes of times.this is hands down the strongest knife out there. the sheath is perfect. its so hard to find a sheath that matches the quality of the knife going in it, but this one is! the knife fits perfectly and doesnt wobble around. it has both a snap and velcro so you know the knife will not fall out. the blade is also very easy to get out of the sheath. this is good if you need to get it out in a emergency. it also has an outside pouch with a velcro flap. you can put alot of useful things in there such as a folding knife, multitool, sharpener, lighter, firesteel or even a compass. i personaly carry a bic lighter and a smiths sharpener.the items in there will not fall out by accident either.the handle is made of a very hard plastic that is very comfortable. dont be afriad to use the handle to bang in tent spikes. it does that very well. the knife is also easy to sharpen and holds its edge well. the tip looks delicate but is very strong. you can hammer the knife tip into a tree about an inch or so, then step on it and the tip will not break! i have tried this, and frequently try to break the knife and cant. you will not be dissapointed with this perchase and the price shown here is by far the best around. i also have given this knife to 2 marines i know who went to iraq. both loved them and are very proud sog owners.

4Impressive knife for the price...  Jul 29, 2009
By NH
I am truly impressed by the quality of this knife and sheath in relationship to the price. I opted for the straight edge with the satin finish, because the TiNi coating wasn't worth the additional cost to me. The coating definitely adds the "cool factor" and has some functional advantages, but for casual camping/backpacking, I did not find it necessary.

The product arrived sharp with a light protective oil on the blade. Upon examination, I was unable to find any quality issues or blemishes. The blade has a nice, smooth surface finish. I would not classify it as a satin finish though. It is reflective, so if that is an issue for your application, go with the TiNi coating. I like the fact that this knife is full tang, yet still lightweight, and the sheath has many mounting options. For this reason, it's great for backpacking. I added a couple of small D-rings to the back of the sheath and clipped the knife upsidedown to my left pack strap allowing for quick crossdraw accessibility.

The sheath, in it of itself, is just as nice as the knife. It features a MOLLE style attachment system and a functional front pocket large enough to accommodate a multitool, small flashlight, sharpener etc. The sheath features a plastic insert to guard the nylon from accidental cuts and gives some retention to the blade in case the handle strap isn't clasped. The handle strap consists of a button snap and velcro to ensure that everything is secure. Also, I read one review stating that their knife came with a sheath that did not match the photo. I believe the reviewer was referring to an older model sheath SOG once issued. Thankfully, mine was shipped with the pictured sheath. This model is much improved and I can appreciate that customer's disappointment.

Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase and would highly recommend it on a visual inspection basis. I'm looking forward to the field test. 4 out of 5 stars due to the manufacturing location, but that is becoming more and more common these day. In my opinion, the SOG quality policy has been implemented in their lower-cost manufacturing facilities abroad, and this is still going to be a reliable product.

5Backcountry workhorse  Jun 26, 2009
By Cougarbait33
This is a great blade. Good hard steel that holds and edge. Excellent grip and balance. A little big for some, but I only carry this knife when I am in the backcountry. It is surprisingly light, and it is nice to have a big, solid blade to use for food preparation, general survival use, and pig stickin.

5Beauty and Versatility that Fits  Mar 20, 2010
By John de Villiers "Bach"
From the day I got this knife in the mail, I have been thoroughly impressed with it. It's beauty, balance, comfort and cutting power all combine to make it one of my favorite camping/survival blades available.

The Blade:
First of all, the beauty of the satin finish really caught my eye when I took it out of the box. It also makes it easy for me (one who always makes sure my tools are both looking good and ready for the next job) to see whether I've done a good job cleaning the knife after use. I am a big fan of either a dedicated fixed or dedicated serrated blade when it comes to fixed blade knives, as the length means that I can really get the most out of the blade. At first, I didn't really understand how useful the notching on the back side of the blade was, but it has proved its worth as almost comparable to a hand saw, which, in my opinion, is pretty useful. I have used this blade to cut, pry, chop, spear, "saw"... you name it.

The Handle:
Wow, this handle is a very good example of what fitting the hand looks like. The knife has its balance point exactly where the index finger grips the handle. The grip is well thought out, although it is a little on the shallow side, and can become a little smooth to handle when my hands are greasy. The hole at the base is an excellent spot for a lanyard.

The Sheath:
One thing I love about the sheath is that it offers not only a place for me to store my knife, but a pouch for my multi-tool as well. The knife is fully protected and secured by the clip-on top flap. This feature with the standard sheath pocket and velcro handle strap mean I can rest assured knowing that, even with all the crazy things I do, my knife isn't just going to fall out of the sheath.

Hope this helps, and happy knife hunting!

5Nice knife. Superior quality.  Mar 05, 2010
By Bryan Faucheaux
This knife is made by SOG, one of the top American knife companies out there. They first made military combat knives during the Vietnam War.

I was looking for a fixed blade that is not too big but not too small, on the inexpensive side, and can handle many tasks well like whittling wood. This is the answer.

The dimensions are exactly what SOG said they would be. I measured it with a ruler. The blade is the width of 3 quarters stacked, so it is a thick, sturdy blade.
It comes literally razor sharp out of the box, and I shaved a patch of arm hair with ease. I had fun with slicing paper with the knife, it was so sharp. The tip of the knife is literally a needle point, so the stabbing power is nice.

The finish is satin, which is very nice. I don't like black coating on blades.
I also liked that there were no serrations. I hate serrations.

The sheath is well-made, and made of nylon with a front pouch(big enough to put a multi-tool in). There is a hard plastic insert to put your knife in. It stays in pretty secure, but it's easy enough to pull it out. On the sheath, there is a a little nylon strap with a snap button, and velcro, so the knife is even more secure.

The handle is is made from "kraton". It's basically a hard plastic. It is very grippy, with the little bumps on it (Wet hands don't matter. it still grips well.) The handle is very comfortable, but the only problem with the handle is that it's made for medium to large sized hands. My hands are on the small side, even though I'm a guy. NEVERTHELESS, it's a good handle.

I was very impressed with the knife, and I would recommend it to anyone, preferably men with larger hands. It's functional, beautiful (the beauty cannot compare) and something to show off to people.
