4Nice knife, good price  Jun 07, 2007
By E. Cardoza
Decent piece of equipment for the price. Very good blade, nice and thick, tough. Sheath leaves a little bit to be desired as to strapping to a pfd, but overall, I'm glad I bought it. Lots of bank for the buck.

5Very tough knife  Feb 10, 2010
By David Carswell
I bought mine originally for use as a second dive knife, but it has been my primary (pretty much only) fixed blade knife since. I've had it for about 15 years, and it is still sharp, good as new. This is a very durable, tough, reliable knife; the serrations on the blade mean that it'll still cut well even as the blade loses its edge.

5The real survival knife  Oct 09, 2009
By Ascetic Barabas
This is a very useful knife, better in most survival situations than those big rambo sawback knives. The blunt tip can pry things open, the blade can cut rope or what not, the blade is thick and tough and rust resistant. The handle fits really well in the hand and the indentations provide good grip, it makes it easy to manipulate the blade for fine work and the holes in the handle let you hang it off carabiners or around your neck if you wanted to. It's light and handy. This would be perfect to stick in a fanny pack-sized survival or wilderness kit. Basically, for it's purpose it would be hard to make something better.

4Gerber 05640 River Shorty  Jun 12, 2010
By Wild Bill "Texas Paddler"
The purchase was flawless. I got what I asked for at the agreed price and it arrived in record time for regular mail. Kudos to the vendor.

The knife will likely be useful to me, but I have had a couple problems with it. I assumed that the sheath was designed to fit onto the black knife clips on my life jacket. It will not, so I had to find another, less desirable way to secure it.

I used the knife to cut some cheese for lunch. It worked great. When I tried to fashion a quick baler from a plastic water bottle, the blunt tip made it difficult to start the cut. I understand that it is a safety feature and that it is mainly intended for cutting ropes, straps or other items in an emergency. I would probably opt for the Shorty version that has the point since the sheath does a good job of preventing accidental punctures.

2What happened to Gerber  May 01, 2012
By mr.blanco333
When I was a kid there was no better knife than a Gerber. This is the second Gerber product I have been disappointed in. The sheath does not fit my pfd slot and the knife is junk. Should have spent the $20.00 more and got the NRS co-pilot river knife. I believe this is the last time I will be buying a Gerber.
The total length of the knife in the sheath is 7 1/2 inches. Not something I want to be wearing on my chest.
