5Call Crows to Protect Chickens, this one WORKS  Feb 06, 2012
By Frederick Dunn "The Fellowship Of The Feather"
I know that this will seem to be quite a strange review to most of you...

My purpose in calling crows is not to shoot them, but to use them as predator protection for my free range chicken flock.

When a Red Tailed Hawk arrives on the scene here, or other hawk variety that is capable of killing and eating a chicken, I noticed they would fly away when harassed by crows.

So, seemed natural to get a crow call such as this one and possibly call in crows when a hawk shows up.

I selected the Primos Old Crow Call after viewing several videos online and then reading the posted reviews here on amazon.

I am NOT a bird call expert and have no experience calling in wild life. I simply took the call out of the package, and was kicked out of the kitchen by my wife after making what I called "crow calls"... It makes dogs bark right away also.

After I finished practicing and cupping my hands just right, I felt I had it down. I also extended the plastic tab that vibrates to make the sound, all the way to the leading edge of the mouth piece (mouth piece is in two parts) for a low sound. I also practiced putting "gravel" in my voice when making the caw-caw-caw sound. I also learned that the sound should be made in blasts of three... short caw caw caw pause caw caw caw for a sort of alarm... and the longer caaawwwww caaawwww cawwwww extended call for a "come and see" invitation to any crows that may be in the woods and so on.

I live in rural Pennsylvania where crows are not densely populating the area, but they are indeed around.

I stepped out on the deck, observing no crows and not hearing any distant crows, I gave it my best. I was excited and completely surprised when no sooner had I put the call in my pocket, five crows came out of the woods and over the tree line towards my home. I ran into the kitchen and pointed them out to my wife as proof of my crow calling success! She murmured "wooow" sort of under breath...

I have since learned not to allow the crows see me making the call. They are very clever and will soon pick up on the fact that they are being manipulated buy the "boy who called crow"...

The Test came when I woke one morning to see a Cooper's Hawk staking out my poultry yard... I stepped out on the deck and it simply retreated to a higher perch at the edge of the woods. I took out my handy (never far from the kitchen door) Old Crow Call and gave the alarm (with some scolding growls for good measure)... my band of black feathered chicken protectors showed up in seconds, not minutes... they immediately noticed and began harassing the hawk which soon was flying down the tree line to the south, followed by my loud rowdy feathered friends.

So, in closing this review, I cannot attest to how close in you can call a crow, but it gets FIVE STARS from me for getting crows interested in my meadows. It does exactly what I needed it to do and sounds authentic to me... good enough to make our crows curious and to leave their roosts to come and check it out.

The unit comes apart easily and you can rinse out the mouth piece and reed/plastic vibrating part for storage. The main body is wood an has a comfortable feel in the hand, the inside is rough and apparently shaped well for broadcasting the sound you make.

Never let the crows see you with it, or making the call sounds... give the call, then go inside, or just stand around while the crows arrive on the scene... it's fun and it works.

I was worried that this crow call would not work.I quickly put those worries behind me the first time I tried it!I saw two crows,I blew on it three times and the next thing was crows out of nowhere ,and I mean a lot of them! This call works great, evan for a beginner.

5Wow-great product  Apr 09, 2012

First time Turkey Hunter...struggling to find the Gobblers. This crow call was very easy to learn to use, and I got great results. Out of 30 attempts, I got a response about 10-12 times. Nicely made, good price.
