Koga SD Mini Koga SD2

Bob Koga began his martial arts career at an early age beginning with Judo at 12 and moving on to wrestling in high school. After graduation Bob joined the Air Force, and while stationed in Japan, he resumed his Judo training as well as studying Jiu Jitsu, Jo-do and Akido. After finishing his stint in the Air Force, Bob moved to Los Angeles where he joined the LAPD and served with great distinction for 25 years. During his tenure with the LAPD, Bob became widely recognized as an outspoken proponent of the straight baton as opposed to the PR24 or side handle baton (currently popular in departments across the land). Upon retirement, Bob launched a second career as a police trainer who specialized in teaching officers how to control and subdue violent offenders using empty hands as well as with the famous Koga Straight Baton. In the course of his career Bob witnessed and participated in many street fights and violent altercations. These experiences taught him that there was a real need for a small, light, easily concealed self-defense tool that could bridge the gap between using empty hands and the more dangerous baton. These insights led him to create the Koga SD1. Made of virtually unbreakable plastic, the SD1 can increase the ability of the average person to defend himself several times over. With proper training, it can function as a fantastic aid in leverage when obtaining joint locks or submission holds. But where it really shines is as an intermediate impact tool. You see, police and civilians alike face a perplexing dilemma when contemplating employing fist or baton blows. Blows struck with the fist may be too weak, or worse, result in a broken hand, while blows struck with a baton may be too powerful resulting in grave injury or even death. The SD1 however, solves this problem, neatly bridging the gap by concentrating and magnifying the effect of hand blows while minimizing the likelihood of permanent injury or death. 4Awesome training and less-lethal self defense tool!  Jan 17, 2008
By Jason Oates
This is a pretty cool device. It's made of an extremely hard resin and is very durable. This works great a training, physical compliance or less-lethal self defense tool. It is rather lightweight, but it is still enough to fit in your pocket, but large enough to get the job done. The larger model, (the SD2) has a rounded dome at either end versus the somewhat more pointed ends of this SD1. (Note that it's not completely pointed and will not easily puncture material; at least without some extra force :) ) Overall a great device!

5Good item, for what is is.  Jun 14, 2009
By K. Holler "Stainless"
This is an inexpensive, simple to use defensive tool.
Small and light enough to carry loose in a pocket - simple enough to employ under stress. (Get a good grip on it, then stab hard at whatever you can reach.)

This is obviously NOT some "miracle" device that makes the owner invinceable - but it CAN be a usefull option in some situations.

Cold Steel has been making good stuff for several years.

5Def. tactics  Oct 30, 2008

The Koga, along with a Kuboton is a great tool for teaching women defensive tactics in what has become a more dangerous world. Used properly, it can save a life, although situational awareness is most important.

5Koga SD2 Self Defense Tool  Nov 06, 2010
By iggi
It really is lightweight and you can really get a good grip on it compared to say a kubaton that was made out of a broom stick. The shape of it is ergo dynamic and will allow you to hold it closer to one end without sacrificing too much grip. You can look up videos on youtube of some guy piercing some pieces of plywood, which should mean that hitting someone with it will likely leave them bruised pretty badly, or at least run enough pain through them (if contact is made on an area with bone near the skin) to allow you to run off (it's self defense not offense).

It will nick over time, although I feel that most plastics would if hit with enough force. Breaking it, at least with two hands is not achievable (at least not by my friends who I bet wouldn't be able to break it), but again, it will probably break with enough force.

Since Pressure = Force/Area , the pointed (albeit, rounded) ends will multiply the damage done to whatever is on the receiving end.

I'll update this review if anything changes.

5Light, lethal defense tool.  Jun 13, 2010
By G. Frieland
I carry this in my front pants pocket when I go into Mexico. Mostly for defense against muggers and drug addicts. A forceful blow with this anywhere on the human body will cause excruciating pain, particularly on areas with little fat and superficial skeletal features. Would work great for grappling too. And in combination with pepper spray.
