Just what I needed Dec 15, 2011
By Un Sang Oum First off I start by saying that this was just what I needed/wanted. I wanted a scope cover for my Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 Riflescope (SF Matte, BDC) - great scope by the way. This one fit perfectly. I used it on my .308 and so far no issues with it coming loose or turning.
Disappointing durability Oct 28, 2011
By monoblocks Perhaps they'll fare better on a bolt-action scope, but these Butler Creek covers certainly don't last very long on a tactical application where the rifle and scope may likely be subjected to rough conditions and/or handling. I bought one of these for my Trijicon TR-24 that I have mounted on one of my black rifles; it lasted little over two months out in the woods before a branch finally tore the flip-up cap completely off. To be honest I never would've considered a lens cap as a wear-down, consumable item (well, except for having one fall off and subsequently losing it), but there it is with these Butler Creek covers.
The weak point is the plastic hinge point; the plastic used to make the cover and the hinge are is molded all in one piece. Its key liability is that the material is soft and prone to tearing; you will not confuse this 'polymer' with Magpul or Tango Down quality. With the cover open the hinge plastic has proven itself through use as not being very well reinforced as well. With another rifle wearing a Bushnell scope, I noticed that even light bumping of the cap when the rifle/scope is on the workbench will cause the flip-up cap to twist perpendicular to the pivot spring, starting the tearing process and the ultimate demise of the entire cover. But snagging the cap on vegetation is the worst treatment; it can and will rip the plastic rim of the cap where the hinge arm extends out and the cap subsequently disappears into who knows what in the thick underbrush. I also had a BC front objective hinged cover fail in the same manner a couple of days ago; needless to say with my recent spate of BC cover failures I'm not amused. And the glowing review I gave for that front objective cover (size 02A) is going to receive a thorough do-over.
Besides that little, very irritating self-destructive bent, this and the other covers otherwise did their intended job well. When closed, it protected the rear objective of the Trijicon scope well and the cap fit snugly. The red button release operated each and every time like it's supposed to. It's just a bloody shame that the quality of the materials could not live up to the promise of being an accessory that protects valuable optics. Hard to give a product like this any sort of endorsement when it can't even protect itself from damage within the outdoor environment it's supposed to reside in.
