Great Sharpener for Pocket Knife Enthusiasts and Home Chefs Sep 30, 2009
By P Rosen DMT's Diafold Magna-Guide Diamond Sharpening System will put a razor sharp edge on your pocket and kitchen knives. It is easy to use, just follow the directions. And don't use too much force.
It is endorsed by many users on bladeforums dot com and other websites as an excellent sharpening system.
Also, make sure to buy the Diafold Coarse / Extra Coarse sharpening stone to sharpen very dull blades and for reshaping the angles. If you don't, you will be disappointed.
As for some criticism of the system: 1) The plastic isn't weak or cheap (at least the version I have). If it does break because of a defect, they will replace it for free, according to the packaging. 2) Obviously, if you prefer sharpening your knives freehand, this system isn't for you. If you are like me, and can't hold a constant angle, this is the system for you. 3) The sharpener has a break in period...it does get slightly less coarse after 5 or 6 knives. After many uses, you may have to clean it with water. It might even need to be scrubbed with Bar Keeper's Friend or Zud or a scotchbrite. 4) The angle degrees are not marked on the system because the angle will vary with the width of the blade...its basic geometry.

Excellent product Jan 09, 2010
By D. Bissett I recently bought this Alignment system and a separeate coarse/extra coarse Diafold sharpener to replace two DMT whetstones I'd been using for years. This does a MUCH better job than whetstones because you can keep your sharpening angle constant. This product is better than the upgraded kit that includes finer grit sharpeners because you really don't need anything beyond extra fine (most of DMT's sharpening recommendations don't go beyond FINE), and with the money you save you can buy a coarse/extra coarse Diafold and that DOES make a difference because with the extra coarse grit you can put a new edge on a dull knife really quick. After I got it I put new edges on 10 kitchen knives, and they are the sharpest they've ever been. With the adjustable alignment tool you can put a double or even triple bevel edge on your knives, and this makes a lot of difference. I used the 6 and 5 settings to put a double beveled edge on my slicers, utility and paring knives, and the 5 setting to sharpen the chef's knives. I used all 4 grits on each knife and they are literally scary sharp. And I think the edges will last longer the way they are sharpened. It's true that the parts are mostly plastic but unless you're a professional who might sharpen knives more than monthly I think it will last quite awhile. And if the guide should break or wear out these can be bought separately for only a few dollars. This is a very good investment in a good knife sharpener. The only reason I didn't give it 5 was I thought the guide could be made of metal with rubber jaws. That would make it more expensive, but they could sell it as the Super Deluxe version.

Awesome Jan 06, 2011
By youliketodance This sharpening system is great. I paired it with the coarse/extra coarse stone which i would highly recommend you do. The clamp/guide is ok. Its not the greatest but it will get the job done. I will be ordering the gatco metal clamp/guide and pair it with the stones and the magna guide rod. Overall its a great product and well worth the money.
Excellent for price and great at what it does. Feb 13, 2012

Very good sharpener, once I got it home I got my Boker utility blade out and did a well needed sharpen. Started on the red fine side and moved to the green extra fine side. Now the blade can cut a hair by placing the hair on the blade and dragging the hair downwards onto the blade, it is scary sharp. The sharpener itself is of good quality, the fold out handles are plastic, I can't say it is the best plastic but I'm sure it will last. I first sharpened the knife without the guide system, but the guide system makes easy work of sharpening, taking the guess work out of keeping the same angles whilst sharpening. It is dummy proof, I highly recommend this product!

Kind of unwieldy looking, and a bit awkward to use at first. However, compared to the usual dragging through carbide cutters or uneven whetstones, this is the very best I've found. This is especially great for my 3" blades up to my Buck Special which has always been tough to sharpen. I can shave with it now (though not advised). Pricey. But worth it.
